Tiny Treasures

Page 1:

We recognize 3 archangels in the Catholic church on their feast day of September 29th. On the cover of our booklet is St. Michael. His name means “Strength of God”. When he is pictured, he usually has a sword and/or a shield.

Notice the objects the archangels are holding. This helps us to understand their jobs.

  • St. Michael, the archangel, has a sword and shield. This reminds us that he is part of God’s army. We sometimes ask St. Michael to protect us from evil.
  • St. Raphael, the archangel, is holding a fish. He is called the healer of God. In the bible, St. Raphael heals a man using parts of a fish.
  • St. Gabriel, the archangel, is holding a message. He is called the messenger of God. He was the one that asked Mary if she would be Jesus’ mom!

The archangels are part of the 9 choirs of angels. They are second from the bottom. The higher the choir is, the closer they are to the throne of God.

St. Padre Pio is often called Padre Pio. He was a friar and priest from Italy. He had wounds like Jesus when He died on the cross. He wore gloves to help cover his wounds on his hands. These wounds are called the stigmata. Padre Pio could also bilocate. This means he could be in two places at the same time.

Saintly Rhymes for Modern Times is a short fun poem book of saints that includes St. Padre Pio.

St. Padre Pio also has a story in Light of the Saints book. Have your “little” shine a flashlight behind certain pages to reveal the images. When you shine a light behind Padre Pio, it reveals the stigmata in his hands.

  • Remind your little about the objects that are associated with each of the archangels.
  • Have a classroom or family discussion on the different ways a person may need help from an archangel.
    • You can also make a classroom/family prayer box where littles can write a name or draw a picture.

Social/Emotional Learning

  • How can you act like the archangels?
    • When you see bad pictures on the computer/tv/iPad turn your head and tell an adult. You will be like St. Michael.
    • When you see someone who is sad or hurting, try to help them by getting help or cheering them up. You will be like St. Raphael.
    • When someone wants to know more about God, the angels and the saints, tell them! You will be like St. Gabriel.

Days to Watch for

  • Sept 23-Feast day of Padre Pio
  • Sept 29-Feast day of the Archangels

Extras

  • Teach your “littles” the St. Michael prayer:
    • St. Michael the archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O prince of the Heavenly hosts, by the power of God, cast into Hell, Satan and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world, seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
  • Our featured word for this booklet to indicate the page numbers is WING . We chose this because we usually associate angels with wings.
